(NYSE:BKD) Brookdale Senior Living Inc., together with its subsidiaries, operates senior living communities in the United States. The company operates retirement centers, assisted living communities, and continuing care retirement communities (CCRCs). Its retirement centers offer basic services, such as meal service, 24-hour emergency response, housekeeping, concierge services, and transportation and recreational services; supplemental care services, including medication reminders, check-in services, and escort and companion services; and various education, wellness, therapy, home health, and other ancillary services. The company’s assisted living communities provide housing and 24-hour assistance with activities of daily living to mid-acuity frail and elderly residents. These centers also offer health assessments, meals and snacks, co-ordination of special diets planned by a registered dietitian, assistance with co-ordination of physician care, social and recreational activities, housekeeping, and personal laundry services. In addition, these centers provide exercise programs and programs designed to address issues associated with early stages of Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. Its CCRCs offer living arrangements and services to accommodate various levels of physical ability and health; and ancillary services, including therapy, home health, and other services. As of December 31, 2008, Brookdale Senior Living Inc. operated 85 retirement center communities with 15,251 units/beds, 409 assisted living communities with 21021 units/beds, and 32 CCRCs with 11,183 units/beds, as well as 22 communities with 4,349 units/beds that provided management services for third parties.
